  • Sweet Potatoes: The star of this recipe, sweet potatoes add a natural sweetness and moistness. I recommend using freshly baked sweet potatoes for the best flavor, but canned options work well in a pinch.

  • Flour: All-purpose flour serves as the base for our biscuits, giving them structure and helping them rise. If you prefer, you can swap in a gluten-free mix to accommodate dietary needs.

  • Baking Powder: This is crucial for achieving that light, airy texture. It helps the biscuits rise beautifully in the oven.

  • Butter: A key ingredient for flavor and flakiness, butter is mixed into the dough. I often use cold, unsalted butter, which yields the best results.

  • Milk: Whether you choose dairy or a plant-based alternative, milk adds moisture and helps bring the dough together smoothly.

Cooking Tips and Notes for Easy Sweet Potato Biscuits

Sweet Potato: The star of our easy sweet potato biscuits is undoubtedly the sweet potato itself. Opt for fresh sweet potatoes, as their natural sweetness and creamy texture elevate the entire biscuit. For ease, you can bake or steam them until tender, allowing their flavors to shine through.

Flour: All-purpose flour is essential for creating that perfect biscuit texture. You can experiment with a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend if you’re seeking a gluten-free option. Just keep in mind that this may slightly alter the texture, but your biscuits will still be delicious!

Baking Powder: This leavening agent is key to fluffy biscuits. Make sure your baking powder is fresh for the best rise; check the expiration date, as old baking powder can result in dense biscuits.

Butter: Using cold, unsalted butter is crucial. You’ll want to cut it into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. This technique ensures that the biscuits are flaky and tender—just the way they should be!

Milk: Whole milk or buttermilk can make your biscuits extra moist. If you choose buttermilk, the slight acidity adds a fantastic depth of flavor, making your easy sweet potato biscuits even more enjoyable.

Mixing: Avoid overmixing the dough; a gentle hand keeps the biscuits fluffy. Once combined, it’s perfectly fine if small lumps remain. Remember, less is more when it comes to biscuit-making! Keep these tips in mind, and you’ll have delicious easy sweet potato biscuits that everyone will adore.

Description

Delicious sweet potato biscuits made with Greek yogurt and a hint of cinnamon.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons sweetener (or sugar)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (Butter should be cold)
  • 1/4 cup plain non-fat Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 cup cooked mashed sweet potato (The sweet potato should be chilled and not freshly cooked)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 4 teaspoons butter
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons honey

Instructions

  1. Combine flour, baking powder, sweetener, cinnamon and salt in a bowl.
  2. Add in the Greek yogurt, mashed sweet potatoes, and butter.
  3. Use a fork to mix. Do not over-mix. Take the fork and knead the butter throughout the mix. You will notice the dough will become flaky and there will be some flour that remains in the bowl. This is ok. If you overmix the dough it will result in biscuits that are tough and hard.
  4. Spread the dough out on a floured surface. Use your hands or a pin to roll the dough out 7×7 and 1/2 inch in height. If you want thick biscuits, roll out the dough so that it’s 1 inch high. This will result in less biscuits. Don’t overwork the dough.
  5. Use a biscuit cutter to cut out biscuits, or cut them any way you like. If you use a biscuit cutter, reallocate the dough and roll it out again for additional biscuits using the excess dough.
  6. Beat the egg in a small bowl and combine it with the water and stir. Brush the top of each biscuit with the egg wash.
  7. Line the air fryer basket with air fryer parchment paper. You can only use parchment paper made for the air fryer. This helps prevent the bottom of the biscuits from browning too fast and potential burning. You can go without it, but keep that in mind.
  8. Air fry for 4 minutes on 300 degrees.
  9. Adjust the temperature to 400 degrees for 2-5 minutes until the biscuits have turned a deep golden brown.
  10. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  11. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper.
  12. Place the biscuits on the parchment paper.
  13. Bake the biscuits for 15-20 minutes until they are golden brown and the bottom appears crisp.
  14. Combine the butter and honey and mix. Add more or less if you wish. In general, the rule of thumb is 1/3 of the amount of honey to the amount of butter used.

Notes

  • For best results, ensure the sweet potato is chilled before mixing.
  • Keep an eye on the biscuits during air frying to avoid burning.
