Description

Delicious homemade sourdough donuts with a sweet glaze.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/2 cup sourdough discard (6 ounces)
  • 3/4 cup whole milk (6 ounces)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 3 1/3 cups all-purpose flour (15 ounces), plus more for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions

  1. Warm the milk and activate the yeast by stirring in sugar and sprinkling yeast over the top. Let sit for 5 minutes.
  2. Combine melted butter, sourdough discard, eggs, and a pinch of salt in a mixing bowl.
  3. Add flour in three batches, mixing until just combined.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and refrigerate for 1-2 hours or overnight.
  5. Roll the chilled dough to 1/2 inch thickness and cut out donuts.
  6. Cover the donuts and allow them to rise for about 45-60 minutes.
  7. Heat oil to 350°F and fry donuts for about 1 minute per side until golden brown.
  8. Drain on paper towels and dip in the prepared glaze.
  9. Enjoy warm or store leftovers at room temperature.

Notes

  • Make sure to sift the powdered sugar before using.
  • Donuts are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored at room temperature for a couple of days.
